Meet Michèle Crider, 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award Winner

Michèle Crider, internationally acclaimed soprano and Quincy Senior High School alumna, will be honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award by the Quincy Public Schools Foundation at the organization’s signature gala, A Night to Dream Big, on Friday November 7, 2025.

Crider first discovered the magic of music as a young child—a spark that would ignite a career spanning the world’s most prestigious opera stages. Raised as one of ten children in a music-filled household, she began singing at an early age, quickly demonstrating the remarkable talent that would define her life.

A proud graduate of Quincy Senior High School, Crider earned a Bachelor of Music from Culver-Stockton College before pursuing a master’s degree in vocal performance at the University of Iowa. Under the guidance of distinguished mentors, including Simon Estes, she made her operatic debut in Madama Butterfly. Her breakthrough came in 1989 when she won a top prize at the Geneva International Music Competition, propelling her to international prominence.

Crider’s luminous voice has since graced the world’s most revered stages, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, and La Scala in Milan. She is celebrated for her commanding portrayals of Verdi heroines such as Aida, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Norma, blending powerful lyricism with profound emotional insight. Collaborating with legendary conductors including Muti, Levine, Ozawa, Barenboim, and Mehta, and performing with orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic, Crider established herself as one of the era’s most distinguished dramatic sopranos.

In 2010, she returned to Quincy to perform as Cio Cio San in Madama Butterfly with the Muddy River Opera Company—a poignant homecoming that highlighted her enduring connection to the community that nurtured her early love of music.

Beyond the stage, Crider has devoted herself to mentorship and teaching. Since 2012, she has served as Professor of Vocal Performance at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria, reflecting her standing as a foremost interpreter of Verdi soprano roles. In 2018, the University of Iowa awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Musical Arts in recognition of her exceptional accomplishments and lifelong dedication to music and mentorship.

The Quincy Public Schools Foundation will honor Crider at A Night to Dream Big, celebrating her achievements as a testament to the enduring impact of Quincy Public Schools and the community’s commitment to supporting the arts.
